As the temperature climbs, so do electric bills.
Limestone County residents who need help paying their bills are encouraged to seek assistance from one of the agencies in the county. Most of them use federal income guidelines to determine eligibility.
“We give utilities assistance twice a year to those who qualify and food four times a year,” said Donald Stone, director of operations for Limestone County Churches Involved. “The money comes from various churches.”
To qualify, applicants need to bring proof of income, such as a bank statement, pay stub or letter from the person for whom they work; a copy of the bill they want LCCI to pay; and an Alabama driver’s license or ID card.
“A lot of the people we deal with have no income, and we won’t let anyone go hungry and we can help with (utility) bills,” Stone said.
Other agencies offering utility bill assistance include:
• Community Action Partnership, 110 Thomas St., Athens, 256-233-3905
• Limestone Food and Shelter Program, 1300 Armory St, Athens, 256-230-6311
Like most public utilities in North Alabama, Athens Utilities collects donations from customers to help those who cannot pay their bills.
Under “Project Heat,” customers donate a few dollars when they pay their own utility bills and that money is set aside for those in need, General Manager Gary Scroggins said. Applications for assistance can be made through the Department of Human Resources at 1007 W. Market St. in Athens. The telephone number is 256-216-6380.
