WEATHER

Partly cloudy today. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Highs around 90. Southeast winds around 10 mph in the morning becoming light and variable. Chance of rain 20 percent. Mostly clear tonight. Lows in the mid-60s.

AROUND THE COUNTY

Today: Singing on the Square will begin at 6 p.m. today featuring Master’s Touch and Committed. In case of the rain, the event will move to the Limestone County Event Center. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs to the east side of Limestone County Courthouse and enjoy the free concert. Contact: 256-232-5411.

Saturday: Athens-Limestone Community Association and the Trinity High School Classes of 1969 and 1973 will present a Community Services Day Saturday on Brownsferry Street at the old Trinity High School site. Day begins at 8 a.m. and ends with gospel music from 1:30-3 p.m.  Free health screenings and voter registration. Moon Bounce and Rock Slide for children. Dollar raffle tickets for $250 cash or a 32-inch LCD TV. Public invited

In Limestone County:

Delays likely as U.S. 72 resurfaced


Drivers traveling east into Madison County on U.S. 72 should expect some significant delays over the next two months.

 This week, crews with Dothan-based Wiregrass Construction began resurfacing a stretch of the highway from County Line Road to Nance Road.

Attorney will seek to move Auburn slaying trial


An attorney for a Montgomery man accused of killing three people in a shooting at a party near Auburn University said Thursday she will ask that his trial be held outside of Lee County, where the school is located.

University of Alabama system to raise tuition

If approved, tuition for in-state undergraduate students will rise 7 percent, from $4,300 per semester at the main Tuscaloosa campus to $4,600.

State jobless rate inches up

Alabama's unemployment rate has gone up for the first time since last summer. State officials announced Friday that the rate rose from 7.2 percent in April to 7.4 percent in May.

Nationwide manhunt continues for surgeon who shot woman


The search for a trauma surgeon and former military weapons expert who disappeared after the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend in a Buffalo hospital escalated into a nationwide manhunt Thursday, with authorities warning law enforcers and the public he could be armed and dangerous.

The man can be heard on a recording of Wednesday's call complaining that he "specifically asked for little turkey and little ham, a lot of cheese and a lot of mayonnaise," and the Grateful Deli in East Hartford got it wrong.
