The Athens Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation at Elm Wood Apartments on Elm Street in Athens.
Police Chief Floyd Johnson said friends discovered the body of Sharon Wellington, 32, shortly after 7 p.m. Concerned friends who had not heard from Wellington over the last couple of days made the discovery.
Wellington reportedly lived alone in the apartment.
Johnson said Wellington’s body has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences Lab in Huntsville for an autopsy. The department is releasing no other details about the manner of death or information that could compromise the investigation.
Anyone who has had contact with the victim or who has information about the case is asked to call the Athens Police Department at 256-233-8700.
