More than $1.1 million in FEMA aid has been received by Limestone County residents in the wake of the April 27 tornadoes, according to figures released Friday.
FEMA spokesman Don Bolger said that as of Thursday evening, 2,321 Limestone residents had applied for aid and that a total of $1,158,102.82 had been granted. At least $931,828.79 is funding for housing only, while $226,274 is for other needs assistance.
On Thursday, 44 residents applied for FEMA funding, though not all of them did so through the Disaster Recovery Center at the Limestone County Event Center. Bolger said 38 residents registered at the DRC on Thursday and 555 had been helped since the location opened May 9.
Bolger said it was impossible to determine how Limestone County’s numbers stack up against DRCs in other counties.
“Every disaster is different, and the reasons they go (to the DRC) is different,” he said. “People are still going and that shows a need, which is why we’re still here.”
Statewide, 77,061 Alabamians have applied for FEMA aid, and $44,071,312.37 has been approved. More than $16 million in loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration has also been approved.
At least 40,539 damaged homes and property have been inspected statewide, which constitutes 98 percent of inspection requests. There have also been 21,548 visits registered to DRCs across the state.
No matter the degree of loss or insurance, survivors are urged to apply for help and keep information up to date before the June 27 deadline. They can register by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., local time. Hearing-impaired persons can call 800-462-7585 for TTY assistance.
Limestone County residents can also apply for aid at the Limestone County Event Center, located at 114 West Pryor St., in Athens.
