Limestone County Sheriff’s investigators believe an Athens man who fatally shot his uncle Saturday night for threatening his girlfriend with a steak knife acted in self-defense. However, the Limestone County District Attorney will decide whether charges result from the shooting, an official said Monday.
Terry Cline, 41, of 13443 Reid Road, fatally shot his uncle, Kenneth Mark Cline, 46, in the chest with a .44-caliber pistol about 9:22 p.m. Saturday outside the home, said Limestone County Chief Investigator Capt. Stanley McNatt.
Kenneth Cline died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, McNatt said.
“According to witnesses, the nephew shot Kenneth Cline after seeing him assault his girlfriend,” McNatt said. “Witnesses also reported that Terry Cline tried to break up the ruckus between his uncle and girlfriend. According to witnesses, the uncle pulled a steak knife and made threatening gestures toward Terry Cline. Terry Cline then fire in self-defense.”
McNatt said the shooting occurred outside the home and in front of people who were at the home at the time.
“No charges have been filed at this time,” McNatt said. “The case is still under investigation and will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges are to be filed.”
Kenneth Cline’s body was sent to the state forensic lab in Huntsville for autopsy, McNatt said.
