The man accused of setting a fire that damaged a CSX train trestle in Athens has been formally charged with arson.
A Limestone County grand jury has handed down an indictment against Samuel Seth Morris, 18, of 508 Brownsferry St. in Athens on charges of second-degree arson and second-degree criminal mischief.
Morris was initially charged in May in connection with an early morning fire April 27 behind The Boat House on South Jefferson Street. The fire damaged the 30-foot tall, 120-feet-long trestle owned by CSX railroad. It has since been repaired.
The trestle was back in service the day of the fire, though at a reduced speed of 25 miles per hour. Before the fire, trains could travel up to 60 mph.
Athens Police officer Jeremy Beavers, who responded to reports of fire, saw the trestle ablaze and three people leaving the area. After interviewing all three, Investigator Chris Slaton arrested Morris.
