Elkmont hosts barbecue event

— Participants in the third annual Smokin’ Railroad Street Barbeque Cook-Off Backyard Division will fire up their grills this weekend in downtown Elkmont.

Those taking part in the event will start setting up at noon Friday and competition gets under way Saturday. The entry fee is $125 and covers all categories in the event.

Music will begin at 7 p.m. Friday. Vendors will open up at 7 a.m. Saturday and concessions will be available. 

Categories for the cook-off include ribs or chicken. A People’s Choice award will be presented for best Boston butt.

People’s Choice tickets go on sale at 10:30 a.m. Saturday for $3. The tasting starts at 11 a.m.

Grillers must have chicken turned in by noon; ribs by 12:30 p.m. Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. or as soon as possible.  Prizes will be awarded in each category and include $125 for first place, $100 for second place, $75 for third place, $50 for fourth place, $25 for fifth place, $100 for People’s Choice, $200 for Grand Champion and $150 for Reserve Champion.

Proceeds from the event help the Elkmont Lions Club provide two $1,000 scholarships yearly as well as help people in the community with sight problems who cannot afford glasses and other needs.
