The city of Athens is urging its water customers to think twice before replying to out-of-town letters offering water service line coverage.
Some Athens Water Department customers have received a letter from HomeServe USA Repair Management Corp. of Birmingham that states a “recent review of our service area indicates that your home is not covered by water service line coverage from HomeServe.”
The letter further states that without this coverage, the homeowner is responsible for the cost of maintaining and repairing the exterior water service line “that brings fresh water to your property” and then lists the address of the person who received the letter. The company offers coverage for $59.88 a year.
Water/Wastewater Manager John Stockton wants customers to know that they are responsible for any lines or equipment located on their property, but the city maintains water lines and equipment not located on private property.
“My concern with the letter is that it could cause confusion for our customers as to what is their responsibility and what is the city’s responsibility,” Stockton said. “I would also urge those who receive these letters to first check with their current insurance company regarding what coverage they already have.”
Anyone who has questions about their water lines can call the Water Department at 256-232-1440.
