A Harvest man, who spent more than two days on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top Ten Most Wanted List after he broke out of the Montgomery County, Tenn., jail Friday, led three area law enforcement agencies on a chase that ended with his capture late Monday in Athens.

Robert Anthony Fusco, 27, of 219 Sarasista Circle, Harvest, is being held in Limestone County jail on charges of being a fugitive from justice, reckless driving and resisting arrest.

Fusco was one of two inmates who escaped from the Montgomery County, Tenn., jail in Clarksville Friday. The other inmate was recaptured. Fusco was awaiting trial on Clarksville Police Department charges of especially aggravated kidnapping, especially aggravated robbery and attempted murder stemming from a home invasion.

Authorities say after Fusco broke out of jail he stole a 1996 Chevrolet GEO from a Clarksville car dealership and led officers on a chase down Interstate 65.

Ardmore Police Officer Michael Cook was unaware of the Montgomery County jail escape when he was patrolling on Pleasant Hill Road on the Tennessee side of Ardmore Monday at 9:55 p.m.

“I noticed that there was this car backing up from Pleasant Hill Road onto Tennessee Highway 7 — a dangerous intersection — and into oncoming traffic,” said Cook. “There are two bars in that area so I thought it was an inebriated driver and a DUI. I attempted to stop him but I had to wait for an oncoming car.”

Cook said by the time he waited for the car, the person he was trying to “engage” had entered Interstate 65 and was headed south. Cook followed him to the Alabama state line and radioed for Limestone County reinforcements.

Cook said a Limestone County Sheriff’s deputy joined the chase at the Elkmont exit.

“The Limestone deputy got in front of me and tried to keep him pushed to the right-hand lane,” said Cook.

At the first Athens exit at U.S. 31 North, an Athens Police Sgt. Fred Millward threw down a spike strip, according to Athens Police Capt. Marty Bruce.

“He drove over that and kept on going,” said Bruce. “Officer Brandon Colburn put down another strip on 64 and he ran over it again, but soon stopped with three flat tires.”

Cook said Fusco was nearly to the U.S. 72 exit when he finally pulled over with three flats.

“Limestone County pulled behind him and I pulled in front,” said Cook. “He wouldn’t exit his vehicle when we told him so I had to bring him out.”

Cook said he was unaware the man he was chasing was one of Tennessee’s most wanted until Fusco stopped.

Montgomery County, Tenn., Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Ted Denny said Fusco and his cellmate had escaped from that jail at about 4 a.m. Friday by removing the window of their cell, tying two bed sheets together and lowering themselves to the ground.

But the cellmate, who se name he didn’t divulge, had just a short crack at freedom when the pair ran out of bed sheet a few feet short of the street and had to drop about 20 feet. The cellmate suffered a broken ankle, Denny said.

Denny said Fusco was in jail charged with robbery, two counts of kidnapping and one count of attempted murder for a 2007 home invasion. He said Fusco shot a female resident, who suffered “extremely serious” wounds, but survived.

Denny said Tennessee lawmen do not know where Fusco was between the time of 4 a.m. Friday and when he was stopped Monday night.

“We knew he was headed into Alabama or Florida because he’s got family there,” said Denny. “But we didn’t know where he was until he was stopped in Alabama.”
