University of Alabama in Huntsville senior and honors student Jennifer Staton of Athens has been awarded a prestigious, all-expense paid Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for Germany in 2009-2010.
“I will be teaching English and United States cultural studies to either middle school or high school German students, but I will also travel a lot during my stay in the country,” said Staton.
She is the daughter of Mike and Debbie Staton of Athens,
Staton enrolled in her first college German course in fall 2006. She had taken two German courses and honors English courses while attending Athens High School. She entered UAH in the fall of 2004 as an art major and went on to choose a major in history, and minor in English. She is also very close to earning a minor in German.
Staton learned about the Fulbright Scholarship while in Germany May 2008, as part of the Global Studies/History course, Legacies of the Third Reich. She applied in September and after being notified she was a finalist, had to go through more screening procedures, including writing essays in German.
While at UAHuntsville, Staton was a member of Phi Alpha Theta, Sigma Tau Delta, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Sigma Iota. She was employed at the Writing Center, and is a PASS leader for Molly Johnson’s World History classes. She has an essay currently set for publication in The Sigma Tau Delta Review, and she won Best Paper Award at the 2008 Phi Alpha Theta Conference at Samford University. Staton was also the recipient of the Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Award from the Department of History, and Departmental Honors in History.
She graduates on May 9. After her year in Germany, she would like to pursue a PhD. in early modern history.
