A Tennessee man was arrested and charged with third-degree assault and driving under the influence after he struck an Athens Police officer Wednesday night at the scene of a three-vehicle wreck, an official said.
Officers at the scene had to remove George Earl Rich, 40, 30172 E. Railroad St., Ardmore, Tenn., from his vehicle and restrain him, said Capt. Marty Bruce.
The wreck occurred about 9:36 p.m. at the intersection of Hine and Elm streets.
“When Lt. Steve Moore and Officer Mickey Hart arrived at the scene, Rich was still behind the steering wheel of his car,” Bruce said. “Officer Hart and Lt. Moore asked for Rich’s driver’s license. While the officers were trying to get Rich’s attention, Rich struck Lt. Moore in the mouth and locked his door. The officers were able to remove Rich from the vehicle and restrain him.”
Rich was treated at Athens-Limestone Hospital for injuries from the wreck and released. He is being held in the Limestone County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 bond.
Also injured in the wreck were Rebecca Guerrero Munoz, 42, of Athens, and her passenger, Darsy Munoz, 15, who were treated at Athens-Limestone Hospital and released. Driver Travis Lee Jarrett, 40, of Athens, also was injured but there was no record of him having been treated at the local hospital.
