Veterans parade returns Saturday after 8 years

Athens residents will see 65 entries in Saturday’s veterans parade, including colorful floats, an Alabama vs. Auburn car-decorating contest, cheerleaders, fire trucks, horses, tractors, motorcycles and a band.

Patriotism is the theme of the parade, which starts at 11 a.m. at Athens High School and follows the Athens Christmas parade route.

It has been eight years since Athens last had a veterans parade, an event designed to recognize and thank our military veterans.

This year, charter members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, including a Pearl Harbor survivor, will be grand marshals. Applebee’s is sponsoring a float for Limestone County’s Honor Flight veterans.

Judges will choose a best float, best vehicle and best overall entry.

Roxanne Haggermaker is planning the event along with her sister, Robin Clem of Piney Chapel, and their father, Roger Keyes of Capshaw, who is commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Athens.

Although there is no entry fee for the parade, donations to the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary would be appreciated.

Before the parade, you can eat breakfast at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW hall off Jefferson Street in Athens.

To help with the parade or for more information, call Haggermaker at (256) 374-2073.
