Philip Rivers spoke to a crowd about his memories of playing football for Athens High School Saturday night at the Second Annual Legends Banquet at the Beasley Center of the First United Methodist Church.
Rivers, who now plays quarterback for the San Diego Chargers, was not the only former player to speak at the event. Baltimore Ravens tight end Lee Vickers also participated in the banquet.
Part of the money raised during the event will be used to help pay for the upgrades to the Golden Eagles’ spring sports complex.
Rivers has spent most of the week in town and worked out with the current team a few days ago.
Athens coach Allen Creasy expressed his thanks to Rivers for the time he has given the Golden Eagles program this week.
“San Diego is a long way from here,” Creasy said. “It takes a lot of coordination to get four kids and wife all the way to Alabama.”
Earlier Saturday the city recognized Rivers’ accomplishments by renaming a street on the AHS campus in honor of Rivers and presenting him with a key to the city.
