Hospital gala to take casual turn this year

By Karen Middleton

Athens-Limestone Hospital’s Foundation is heading in a new direction with its fundraising gala this year: eventgoers can wear jeans.

“Denim & Diamonds,” the eighth annual Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation Gala, will be Feb. 9 at the Roundhouse in Huntsville.

“You will not want to miss this year’s event,” said Foundation Director Amy Golden. “We are taking this enormously successful community event in a completely different direction. Good friends, good food, good music and an even better cause to celebrate, the coming renovation of our emergency department.

The Denim & Diamonds comes with a more casual attire, but that doesn’t mean it will lack glamour.

“Don’t be fooled — there are many ways to dress up your denims,” Golden said. “We are hopeful our guests will take this opportunity to create “Gala Glam” jeans, jean skirts, jean jackets, anything denim for the event. Western, urban casual, formal — there is no wrong way to dress for this event.”

The evening’s activities will be emceed by WDRM’s Dan and Dingo, and will include a silent auction, raffle and live entertainment provided by Jeff Whitlow & the Old Barn Band.

Scott Curry and Ron Casey are creating a one of a kind menu for a one of a kind event. Catfish cakes with orange jalapeno cream sauce and fried green tomatoes, beef tenderloin, rack of lamb, jerk pork and duck breast are on the buffet.

“Guest chef Steve Walton will be on hand to sauté our exotic menu items – rattlesnake and alligator tail, each with its own signature sauce,” Golden said.

Auction items will include a trip to St. Croix, art, photography, designer patio furniture, jewelry, home accessories, signed Auburn University and University of Alabama memorabilia.

Proceeds benefit the renovation of the Athens-Limestone Hospital emergency department.
