High school students from across the southeast will be competing in the Alabama High School Rodeo this weekend at the Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena off Alabama 99 in Athens.
Sponsored by the Alabama High School Rodeo Association, this is the first time for the event to be held in Athens. All participants are high school students and proceeds go to scholarships for deserving high school students.
“We will have high school cowboys and cowgirls in here from all over the southeast including Florida, Tennessee and Mississippi,” said Allen Steen, spokesman for the association. “We also have a few local students who will be participating.”
Admission is $8. Students will get in for $4. All elementary students from Limestone County will be admitted free, Steen said.
Events include bareback riding, breakaway roping, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, goat turn, barrel racing, bull riding and pole bending.
The rodeo starts today at 2 p.m. and again at 7:30 tonight.
On Sunday, the event starts at 2 p.m. Gates open one hour before the event.
