Popular Cowart Elementary School student Paxon Thomas Jordan, who died as a result of a fireworks accident Thursday night at his Clearview Street home in Athens, will be laid to rest today in Athens City Cemetery.
The funeral for the 7-year-old will be at 4 p.m. today at Central Church of Christ. His family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. today at the church.
Paxon died after being struck in the chest by a mortar-type firecracker. Athens Police Capt. Marty Bruce called it a freak accident. He said the firecracker, called Smoke-N-Mirrors, struck the child in the chest above his heart.
After the firecracker was lit on a table in the family’s backyard, Bruce said the family dog brushed against the table knocking it over causing the round to go astray.
Paxon’s father, Shannon and a 13-year-old neighbor were present when the accident occurred. Paxon died later that night in the emergency room at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He celebrated his seventh birthday July 1.
