Don't Forget: Trail riders to hit town around lunchtime

— Don’t forget some roads in Athens will be blocked around lunchtime today as participants in the 19th annual Trail of Tears Motorcycle Ride roar through town.

Line up for the ride will began at about 7 a.m. at the Alabama/Tennessee lines. Motorcycles are expected to arrive at 10 a.m. in Madison where they will take a break for lunch at the Old Time Pottery shopping center on Madison Boulevard.

Riders will leave Madison at approximately 11:30 a.m. and continue through Athens and Florence before arriving in Waterloo around 2 p.m. for the End of the Trail Waterloo Pow Wow.

As trail riders make their way through Athens, police officers will be busy directing traffic and blocking roads.

Chief Floyd Johnson said he estimates riders to arrive in Athens between 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.  At that time, intersections along U.S. 72 from Lindsay Lane to Lucas Ferry Road will be blocked as riders travel the highway west toward Florence. Interstate 65 ramps in Athens will also be blocked, Johnson said.

He added drivers needing to travel north or south can use U.S. 31.

Floyd said issues could arise if drivers try to go around barricades. He advises that if anyone makes the choice to go around a barricade, they should make sure all bikes have driven through the area and it’s not just a break in traffic.

“After riders travel through the area, we will be sure to get the barricades down as soon as we can,” Johnson said.

According to Trail of Tears Commemoration and Motorcycle Ride organizers, the economic benefit to the state of Alabama from people participating in the event has been more than $85 million over 18 years.
