Jessica's tale in 'Facebook Fairytales'

A book coming out by Emily Liebert, titled “Facebook Fairytales,” is a compilation of human interest stories shared over the popular social networking Web site, including remembrances shared by friends and family of the late Jessica Elkins.

Jessica, a vivacious, popular Athens High School cheerleader died June 26, 2007, after a five-day battle against bacterial meningitis and pneumonia.

Since then, the daughter of Talbot and Michelle Elkins of Athens has been memorialized with the establishment of the Jessica Michelle Elkins Love, Live and Laugh Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded through the Limestone Area Community Foundation.

Her Athens High classmates have worked diligently on fundraisers throughout the year and a half since her death to fund the scholarship and, according to Michelle Elkins, they also purchased a granite contemplation bench to place at her gravesite in Roselawn Cemetery.

And Jessica’s friends have poured out their hearts on Facebook.

Jessica’s remembrances will be among a diverse collection of 25 of the most inspiring stories that have resulted from Facebook connections. The stories will emphasize the real-life characters’ personal struggles and triumphs, according to Liebert.

Liebert writes on her Facebook Fairytales site about other stories in the collection:

“Is it possible that a loving couple could adopt a child via a Facebook connection? Yup. Facebook Fairytales...

“Would you believe that a grassroots Facebook group resulted in the mobilization of 12 million people worldwide to fight terrorism?

“Can you imagine receiving a kidney from a stranger via a friend's Facebook status update?”

Facebook Fairytales will be out in February.

“The horrible tragedy that took our lovely Jessica away far too early is about to get some powerful and positive publicity,” said Michelle Elkins, who has supported educational programs for parents about bacterial meningitis since her daughter died and wants to get the word out about this disease.

“A lovely author is in the process of writing a book which will be a collection of 25 amazing and inspiring stories that all have a connection to Facebook in one way or another, and the shared connection that united us with ‘In Memory of Jessica Elkins’ will be one of the stories featured.”

Some of the comments from fans of the page include:

“It's a modern day ‘chicken soup.’ Very cool.”

“What a great idea! Look forward to reading it.”
