Friends of Archives releases new book ‘Schools of Athens and Limestone County’

That first day of kindergarten, a favorite teacher that will always be remembered,  Friday night football games, the Beta Club, first dances, first dates and first dreams — all memories of days gone by when life may have seemed just a little easier.

For some, school days are remembered as their favorite part of life.

The Friends of the Archives recently released the fifth book  researched by Betty L. Taylor dedicated to the very places that house such memories.

The book, “Schools of Athens and Limestone County” is completely indexed and contains 275 photographs, 194 pages and a list of 281 schools.

Within the pages, readers will have the opportunity to discover that Robert Elliott was the first known teacher in Limestone County to open in 1820 a school for boys and girls. The log school house, where he taught, was located just west of the present city Board of Education Office on Washington Street.

Readers will also view photos of students decades ago as well as old photos and new up-to-date photos of the schools still in operation.

It also contains a letter written in 1966 to parents about desegregation by Superintendent C.S. Pettus.

“The book contains all the schools we could find in Limestone County,” said Taylor, who worked on the project for more than a year.

“Most of the photos had been donated to the Archives,” she said.

She said it’s amazing there were so many schools in the area. “I enjoyed working on this book,” she said. “I went to school at Bethel and then Tanner and then finished at Athens.”

“Schools of Athens and Limestone County” costs $35 and is available at Pablo’s, U.G. White General Mercantile and the Limestone County Archives.

Proceeds will go toward purchasing research material of interest to the public.
