Youth learn skills in 4-H classes

Limestone County 4-H sponsored three educational summer classes in July.

The three classes were Fiber Arts, Backyard Barbecue, and Outdoor Adventures. 

The purpose of the summer classes were to provide youth, ages 9-13, opportunities to learn basic skills in areas such as needlework, outdoor cooking, and outdoor activities that they can use in other aspects of their lives.  

On July 8, in the Fiber Arts class, participants learned the basics in counted cross-stitch, crocheting, and hand quilting. Those attending the class were Presley Clark, Kaitlynn Fuqua, Hadley Gilmore, Abby Horne, Allison Lovell, MaKena Milsap, Anna Moyers, Reanna Pipes, Ashlyn Ruf, and Morgan Wyant. 

On July 15, 12 youth participated in the Backyard Barbecue class. They learned basic outdoor cooking skills, the correct use and calibration of a meat thermometer, and food safety. Participants also learned how to successfully barbecue chicken, cook a variety of foods outdoors, and avoid cross contamination.  Backyard chefs included Mathew Black, Ethan Fuqua, Lillian Glanton, Abby Horne, Matthew Martin, Andrew Mitchell, Anna Moyers, Cody Perkins, Levi Pipes, Reanna Pipes, Shelbie Runions, and Ashlyn Ruf.

On July 22, the Outdoor Adventures class consisted of archery lessons and the presentation of animals as predator or prey through their skins and skulls. The class was held at the City Archery Range and Pavilion behind Athens High School. Participants were Cole Chambers, John William Dissey, Mackenzie King, Steven Millsap, Graham Pepper, Ashlee Roberts, Sarah Roberts, and Ashlyn Ruf.

Limestone County 4-H is a United Way Agency with over one thousand members, and is coordinated through the Limestone County Office of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
