A local prayer rally scheduled for Saturday in Athens is expected to mirror a much larger event in Philadelphia at which 20,000 people are expected to attend.
The local event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fitness Park in Athens, located between Washington and Hine streets and behind the new fire station.
The event will mirror events taking place on the Freedom Mall in Philadelphia. Both events seek a “great spiritual awakening” and to pray and fast for the upcoming General Election.
The events are supported nationally by Cry Out America and Jesus for America, and locally by Living Water Works Ministries.
“We must stand for America, when so many would have America fall to the level of a third-world country in our economy, in our armed forces, in our freedom of speech, our right to own weapons privately, in our educational levels and in our religious freedom,” said a press release promoting the event.
The release also calls on all Christians to vote in the Nov. 6 election, and claims that 15 million Christians did not vote in the previous election.
“This must not be this year,” the release said. “Everyone must stand up and be counted or this may be the last American election.”
The Athens event will feature singing, prayer and “a calling for God’s grace and protection every hour until 5 p.m.”
In attendance will be singing evangelist John Axford, Brad Pullum, Shane Baker, Carolyn Chambers, Ted Lankster, Donald Terry and a singing group from Truth Baptist Church.
