ATHENS —
A Madison motorist who struck a guardrail Wednesday and then fled on foot through an Athens neighborhood was listed in fair condition Thursday afternoon at Huntsville Hospital.
David Synder, 22, was driving a 2006 Mini Cooper when he struck a guardrail on Interstate 65 near the Forrest Street overpass, landing in a concrete drainage channel, according to state troopers.
Witnesses to the wreck said Snyder struck the guardrail about 9 a.m. near the 352-mile marker, then exited his vehicle and headed through a Forrest Street neighborhood. Once Snyder stopped, neighbors applied pressure to his wounds until emergency workers arrived.
He was taken by MedFlight helicopter to Huntsville Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment in the surgical intensive-care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson told The News Courier Wednesday he did not know why Snyder fled the area after the wreck. Johnson said Snyder had been involved in a domestic incident late Tuesday night or early Wednesday.
