School’s out and Athens-Limestone Public Library’s 2012 Summer Reading Program is only weeks away.
The theme of this year’s program is “Dream Big — READ” and is for children, teens and adults.
The focus of this year’s theme at the library includes things that roam and go bump in the night as well as sleep and dreams. “Our activities will be themed around nighttime animals such as owls, pajama parties, monsters and more,” said Kelli McLemore, youth services librarian. “They will include stories, crafts, games and activities.”
One story McLemore looks forward to reading is “Stop Snoring Bernard!” by Zachariah Ohora.
The book tells the story of an otter named Bernard who loves curling up to go to sleep. But there is one little problem — Bernard snores, and very loudly. So loudly that he keeps all of the otters awake during naptime. Bernard tries sleeping in new places so he won’t bother others with his snoring. The book follows his journey to find a good night sleep.
The Summer Reading Program will run the month of July. Registration will take place on Tuesday, July 3, and the Ending Party will start at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 28. Dr. Magical Balloons will be on hand for the closing show and children are encouraged to wear pajamas.
“The official Summer Reading Program starts in July,” said McLemore. “But, we have stuff going on in June also.”
June events, which are targeted toward teens and tweens, will run from June 6 through June 28. The group will spend the month honing their juggling and plate spinning skills.
McLemore said the group was fortunate to be the recipient of a skill toy kit from Flow Circus they can use the entire month of June.
Teen and tween juggling classes will be available at the library throughout the month.
Flow Circus will be visiting the Athens-Limestone Public Library at 2 p.m., June 6, to encourage kids of all ages and adults to take part in the Summer Reading Program.
Paul Miller’s one-man show has juggling, tricks and comedy for the whole family.
Miller will share how the library changed his life and allowed him to discover a whole new world of creativity.

Drop-in Storytime will also take place in June. All ages are welcome to stop by the library at 10:15 a.m. most Fridays to listen to stories.
“July is when the real kid fun starts,” McLemore said.
Most events will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the month and appeal to children ages 2 to 12. “Special stuff will be mixed in throughout the week,” McLemore said. “We will have Drop-in Storytime for babies on Fridays.”
She added special teen events will take place Mondays and Fridays. A crocheting class for teens and adults will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, July 2,. Other events such as Henna Tattoo Day on July 6 and a photography class on July 27 are also scheduled.
The library has also planned days centered around busting summer boredom. Boredom Busters take place on Wednesdays throughout the month. Crafts and games will be set up and kids can drop-in between noon and 4:30 p.m.
Adults will also be offered an opportunity to beat summer boredom. Classic Movie Night will be at 6 p.m. Tuesdays during July.
On Wednesdays, adults can bring a brown bag lunch and enjoy “Great Moments in TV History” at 1 p.m.
“It’s a program that includes watching a famous film clip from television and then discussing it while having lunch.”
McLemore said members of the library are excited about this summer’s activities.
“It is going to be all summer long,” she said. “Not just one month.”
“I’m so excited,” she said. “This our biggest program and most definitely the most fun.”
