After bringing home several trophies at the Oct. 27 TVBEST robotics competition at Calhoun Community College, the Athens Bible School Robotics Team will head to a regional competition at Auburn University.
The team won several awards at the local competition, including the BEST Award, second place; Oral Marketing Presentation Award, first place; Mascot Contest, first place; Project Engineering Notebook, second place; SolidWorks CAD Design Award, second place; Best Game Day T-shirt Award, second place; Best Exhibit and Interview, third place; Most Photogenic Robot, third place; Most Robust Robot, third place; and Robot Performance, fourth place.
This year’s game theme was Warp XX. Each participating team was challenged to design and build a robot to mimic a Space Elevator. ABS’s robot’s name is ASTRO, which is short for Advanced Space Travel Robotic Operative.
While strapped to a pole, ASTRO had to transport cargo, such as a solar panel, a fuel cell, a T-structure and a habitation module up and down the vertical space tower during each timed match. All game pieces had to be placed in their specified destination within three minutes.
To compete, all teams were tasked to develop an oral marketing presentation, design and build a marketing booth, manage a team website, record all steps of the engineering process in a Project Engineering Notebook, organize all CAD drawings into a CAD Design Notebook and design a Game Day Team T-shirt.
