Marianne “M” Gatlin and Preston Pylant are on a mission.
Both have been working to bring artists in the Tennessee Valley together and introduce them to the local community.
Gatlin and Pylant recently founded Arts in Athens. The group’s goal is to create community, connection and camaraderie through the arts. Any artist is welcome.
The group, in conjunction with Kindred Spirits in Athens and Buck’s Art Expo in Priceville, will host its first Arts Stroll and Arts Market from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19 at Kindred Spirits. The event is free to the public.
“For me it really is a call out for all artists to rise up,” Gatlin said. “I truly want to empower fellow artists.”
Gatlin said she learned early on that until she called herself a writer or an artist and truly believed that she was one, she would never see herself that way. “I would never believe in myself in that aspect,” she said. “So one day I began introducing myself as a writer. I told myself to believe it. It was the same for calling myself an artist. Until I believed it was true — it wasn’t.” Gatlin said she feels if she had not called herself writer or artist she would not have published any of her books or put her work and art out there for others to see. “That’s why I want to call out in others,” she said. “I want them to rise up and see themselves for the wonderful artistic beings that they are.”
Booths are already filled for the event and include Tennessee Valley artists of all genre such as folk art, wood art, personalized items, crocheters, knitters, quilters, sewers, needle-workers, photographers, potters, singers, jewelry makers, painters, sketch and drawing artists and more.
The stroll is for art only. No yard sale or flea market items will be included.
Live music will be performed throughout the day.
A Porch Poetry Open Mic will follow the stroll beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Porch Poetry is a time for writers and poetry lovers to share their work or the work of their favorite poets.
Kindred Spirits is located at 1221-A Kelli Drive in Athens (log cabin behind Cracker Barrel.)

Restaurant learns online reviews can make or break
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — It was the customer service disaster heard around the Internet.
An Arizona restaurateur, fed up after years of negative online reviews and an embarrassing appearance on a reality television show, allegedly posted a social media rant laced with salty language and angry, uppercase letters that quickly went viral last week, to the delight of people who love a good Internet meltdown.
"I AM NOT STUPID ALL OF YOU ARE," read the posting on the Facebook wall of Amy's Baking Co. in Scottsdale, Ariz. "YOU JUST DO NOT KNOW GOOD FOOD."
