Brad Curnutt cruised to an easy victory in Tuesday’s election, winning his first term as Limestone County Circuit Court clerk.
The longtime Limestone County Sheriff’s lieutenant defeated car salesman Kris Allen 23,658 votes to 8,847 votes, with 32 of 34 precincts counted at press time. From a percentage standpoint, Curnutt had so far garnered 72.74 percent of the vote to Allen’s 27.20 percent.
The two outstanding boxes to be counted Tuesday night include absentee and provisional ballots. Limestone County Circuit Clerk Charles Page Jr. said he sent out 2,032 absentee ballot applications. He was unsure how many of those were returned. But, even if Allen receives every absentee ballot, he could not beat Curnutt.
“I’m very excited and eager to get to work,” Curnutt said after the election. “I’m very appreciative of all the people who worked and helped and supported me — my family and friends who did a lot of hard work through the summer.”
Earlier this year, Curnutt, a Republican, took a leave of absence from his job as a lieutenant investigator in order to run for clerk. He augmented his income by mowing lawns. Curnutt joked after the vote, “I don’t plan on mowing anyone’s lawn but my own now.”
He and his many supporters worked tirelessly leading up to Tuesday’s general election, gaining ground early among the electorate.
Curnutt, 42, who has worked for the Sheriff’s Department for 18 years, will take office Jan. 14 and serve a six-year term. He will replace Page who will retire after 23 years of service to the courts.
His job as circuit court clerk means serving as the business manager for the trial courts, collecting and remitting millions of dollars annually to the General Fund. He will also be custodian of records and chief magistrate, absentee election manager and passport agent.
