Election 2012: Athens City Council District 4 - Joseph Cannon

The News Courier

— My name is Joseph Allen Cannon, and I am running for Athens City Council District 4.

I began my education in the Athens City School system and graduated in the same. I was a proud member of the Athens High School marching band and represented Athens in track and field.

Many citizens know me best from Osborne’s Jewelers, where I worked for many years. Since receiving my degree from Athens State University, I have been an employee of Northrop Grumman as a material planner. 

While I currently commute outside of our city limits for work, I cannot explain the great feeling I get when I return to Athens each afternoon. Another huge reason for this is my wife of seven years, Alisha, and my two children, Tanner, 4 and Addison, 22 months. We attend Friendship United Methodist Church, which is worthy of its name.

It does not take too long of a stay for anyone to fall in love with Athens. I’ve been blessed to live here for 31 years, enjoying every piece of our city and its heritage along the way. It would take a full Sunday edition of this paper for me to describe everything I love about Athens, and I imagine we would agree on most all of it. 

I’ve had the privilege of traveling to many parts of our country, through work, but there really is no place like home. This is a compliment to our city, but more specifically the citizens. We really are the meaning of “down to Earth,” and it’s contagious to most every newcomer we receive.

I do not believe I can ever repay this city for the lifelong impression it has made on me, but I do know it is time for me to try. As your city councilman, I aim to continue our city’s growth by ensuring that we pursue each and every opportunity within our reach.

Any vote that I make, with the council, will not be based on my views, but on the views of District 4 as a majority. Your city councilman is your voice for important choices.

I humbly ask for your vote. You have the right to be heard and the right to ask questions. With your help, I can earn the privilege to listen to my district’s voices, get the answers and keep us in the right direction.
