After serving the citizens of Athens for almost 30 years as a police officer, I have decided to run for City Council District 1. I understand the way city government works.
After retirement, I am an adjunct instructor at ITT Technical Institute. I have been working with young people trying to help shape their future in the field of criminal justice.
I am married to Donna Bruce and we have two daughters. Bethany is a sophomore at the University of Alabama majoring in Spanish. Katie is a freshman at the University of Alabama majoring in exercise and sports science.
Any good candidate for council will surely say they will work to ensure their district will get their fair share of funding for basic services. District one has many infrastructure needs, many roads haven’t been paved in years
The challenge for the next City Council person will be to find ways to fund these projects. I will work to ensure District 1 receives its fair share.
I believe we need someone that has a passion for the city and is willing to try new ideas. We need someone to find ways to sell the city to potential retail establishments and industries. I am that person.
There are many areas in district one that could be developed for these businesses. We should develop partnerships with developers, builders and potential businesses to determine how the city can encourage and assist in development. We need to declare the city of Athens “open for business.”
I have always worked closely with the city schools and will continue to work to ensure our schools remain one of the top school systems in the state. For the city to continue to grow, we must have the excellent school system we have now.
One of the most important assets the city has is its employees. All of the city employees give so much to the citizens of Athens and we should make sure we get the best employees available. We need to give them the tools they need to do their jobs. We also need to make sure that employees want to stay with the city and that the city does not become a training ground for other cities.
I humbly ask for your vote and support of my campaign. You may reach me at bruceforcouncil@gmail.com.
The right person, at the right time, for the right reason.
