Stephen Rivers isn’t big on stats.
All the Athens High junior quarterback cares about is helping his team win, and the past two weeks, the little brother of current Pro Bowl San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, has done just that.
Against Muscle Shoals in the Golden Eagles’ Class 5A, Region 8 home opener, Rivers was 15-of-22 for 224 yards and two touchdowns of 20 and 57 yards.
Last Thursday night in Athens 48-6 win against Class 5A, Region 8 opponent Johnson, Rivers was 12-of-22 for 254 and four touchdowns. His touchdown passes covered 63, 42, 22 and 21 yards.
For his efforts, Rivers has been selected as this week’s Crunch Player of the Week.
“Things have been going good lately,” Rivers said. “I’m starting to feel comfortable and feel we can move the ball at any point in the game. We seem to be clicking now. I owe it all to the offensive line though, without them, nothing works.”
