Elkmont's Huseth honored for performance against Rogers

ELKMONT —  Hayden Huseth wasn’t too happy with his first half performance heading into the locker room at halftime of Friday night’s game against Rogers.

With the tie knotted at seven at the beginning of the third quarter, the Elkmont junior quarterback felt he needed to step things up a notch if his team wanted to come out on the winning side against a physical Pirates team — and he did just that.

Huseth finished the game with 120 yards rushing, including a 56-yard touchdown run that tied the game at seven in the second quarter. He also connected with Joel Swanner on a 14-yard pass in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory for the Red Devils in a key Class 3A, Region 8 game.

For his efforts, Huseth has been selected as this week’s News Courier Player of the Week.

“We knew going in that it was a big game region standing wise and that we were going to have to be physical to win,” Huseth said. “Nothing started out right on offense, but we knew we had to stay in there and keep our confidence, and we did.”

According to Elkmont head coach David Wilson, Huseth has lived up to what he expected.

“Hayden is a dangerous runner and a good passer,” Wilson said. “He adds dimension to the team, and that’s very helpful.”

The Red Devils have another tough test Friday as Lauderdale County pays a visit to Boss Hill Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
