ELKMONT— Despite what Don Jacobs went through last season as the annual rivalry between Elkmont and Ardmore came to a close, the Red Devil head coach was able to breathe a little easier this year as the fourth quarter ticked down Friday night.
The difference? Opportunities.
“Last year we had some opportunities but we didn’t take advantage of them,” Jacobs said following the Red Devils 17-6 win over Ardmore. “Tonight we took advantage of some opportunities. This is a big win for our kids. It gives us a little boost going into region play next week. Things have continued to progress and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Elkmont got on the board with 25 seconds remaining before the half on an 18-yard pass from quarterback Dylan Brazeal to senior wide receiver Levi Gant. José Hernandez’ point after attempt was good for the 7-0 lead.
A 14-yard field goal by Hernandez extended the Red Devils’ lead to 9-0.
Brazel connected with sophomore Hayden Huseth for a 65-yard touchdown with 1:43 remaining in the quarter. The extra point was good.
Ardmore narrowed the lead during the fourth quarter with 5:56 left on a 20-yard pass from quarterback J Tribble to Owen Kilmury. The two-point conversion failed.
“We made way too many mistakes offensively,” Jacobs said of the first half. “We went in with a game plan with the offensive line that didn’t work. We had to make some adjustments, and it took us a while to make them, but once we got on our 1-yard line, we finally got everybody together and we went 99 yards.”
Elkmont finished the night with 275 total yards of offense. Ardmore had 199.
