CAPSHAW- Jeff Pugh had wanted to see how his team would match up against some of the toughest 5A, Region 8 opponents this season.
Friday night, the East Limestone head coach got the opportunity to do that. Unfortunately for Pugh and his team, it didn't turn out quite the way they would have liked. The Indians fell to Hartselle 49-13.
“ Let me tell you, I didn't have my football team ready to play,” Pugh said. “I take full responsibility, and we've got a lot of work to do. We've been saying we've wanted to see how we would measure up and we weren't ready to play. And that's my fault.”
Hartselle took control of the game early in the first quarter, scoring on a 1-yard run by William Lang. Dylan Stephenson's point after attempt was good. Following a safety, the Tigers struck again at the 3:34 mark on a 14-yard pass from Lang to McKinley Hendrix for a 16-0 lead.
Hartselle scored once more with 9:32 in the second before the Indians finally got on the scoreboard on a 32-yard pass from quarterback Manley Carpenter to Chad Silcox. The extra-point attempt by Grant Talbert was no good.
The Tigers scored again on a 20-yard pass from Lang to Malcolm Fossett for the final score of the half and a 30-6 lead.
“I don't know where to start with all the mistakes we made,” Pugh said. “We made so many mistakes, there was no way we were beating a team of that caliber.”
The only other Indian touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 78-yard run by Devin Robinson. Talbert's extra point was good.
East Limestone falls to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in region play.
