Announcements of church events are published each Friday and Sunday in The News Courier. Church briefs must be submitted in writing, either on a form available at The News Courier office at 410 W. Green St., Athens, or sending e-mail to kelly@athensnews-courier.com or a fax to 256-233-7753.

• Lord’s Closet. The Lord’s Clothing Closet is accepting donations of clothing, furniture, toys and miscellaneous items for distribution to the needy and those who have experienced misfortune, such as fires, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily at 19529 Alabama 127. Call Neal Sawyer at 256-270-6013.

• Singing. Cartwright Church of Christ at 23180 Alabama 99 will have a gospel singing at 2:30 p.m. today. For information, call 256-233-0993.

• Family and Friends Day. St. Mark Primitive Baptist Church at 740 Sanderfer Road will have Family and Friends Day today featuring guest elder Louis Malone of Rockford, Ill. Call 256-233-2786.

• All-Saints. Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church in Belle Mina will celebrate Elder Robert Jones and All Saints Memorial Day at 2:30 p.m. today. The Rev. James Robinson and Mt. Zion C.P. Church of Madison will be in charge of services.

• Revival. Little Elk Missionary Baptist Church at 4692 Snake Road will hold a revival at 7 nightly from Sept. 7-9. Sept. 7 service will feature speaker Kenneth Langford of Fletcher’s Chapel with music by the Woodruff Family; Sept. 8 will feature speaker Darryl Brooks with Round Island Baptist Church with music by Open Door Ministries; Sept. 9 will feature speaker Kenny Brinkley with music by Ascending Voices. • Revival. St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church will hold a revival from 6:30-8:30 nightly Sept. 7-9 at 18049 N. Jefferson St. in Athens. Featured churches are: Tuesday, Larry Lockett and New Hopewell M.B. Church of Tanner; Wednesday, Cory Thomas and New Beria M.B. Church of Elkmont; Thursday, Edward Owens and Shiloh M.B. Church of Decatur.

• Mud volleyball. Victory Chapel will hold a mud volleyball tournament at East Limestone and Copeland roads beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. Entry is $80 per team and is due Sept. 4. Call Ben Sides at 256-278-6462 or Angie Sides at 256-278-5268.

• Men’s and Women’s Day. Little Ezekiel Missionary Baptist Church will hold Men’s and Women’s Day at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 featuring guest speakers Jackie Irwin, associate minister of Mt. Pisgah M.B. Church and John Irwin, pastor of Mt. Pisgah. The topic is “Being the Man and Woman God Created You to Be.” For information, call 256-232-6247.

• Community picnic. St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church at 18049 N. Jefferson St. will hold its annual community picnic featuring food, fellowship and games from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 11. In the event of rain, the event will be Sept. 18.

• Labor of Love Festival. New Life Baptist Church invites the public to its annual Labor of Love Festival from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. There will be free food from several local restaurants, free clothing, free blood pressure screenings, and other services that will be given away to the public. It’s first come, first served. • Candlelight March. Peace Missionary Baptist Church at 1214 Plainview Circle in Athens will hold its annual Mothers and Deacons Candlelight March at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12. Pastor Kenneth Langford will give the message.

• Gospel meeting. Northside Church of Christ at North Jefferson Street and Ninth Avenue will host a gospel meeting featuring speaker Mark Posey from Sunday, Sept. 12- Wednesday, Sept. 15. Sunday services will be at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Services Monday through Wednesday will be at 7 p.m. nightly. For more information, call 256-232-3179.

• Harvest revival. Greenbrier Baptist Church at 7939 Greenbrier Road, Madison, will host a harvest revival at 7 p.m. each Thursday night in September. Speakers are: Tommy Reid, Sept. 9; Joe Holmes, Sept. 16; Junior Hill, Sept. 23; and Michael Mason, Sept. 30.     The Bethel, Tenn., Lodge 194 F&AM will serve a buffet breakfast to benefit charity from 7-9 a.m. Saturday at the Lodge building. Public invited. Nonperishable food items are being collected for the food bank.

    American Legion Post 49 will host a Memorial Day ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Monday at the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives at 100 W. Pryor St. in Athens. Lt. Gen. Richard P. Formica from Redstone Arsenal will be guest speaker.

    Local help is needed to ensure every deceased veteran in Limestone County has a flag placed on his or her grave this Memorial Day, Monday, May 28.     A “pawsitive” reading experience dedicated to improving reading skills of children ages 5 and older, called 4 Paws and a Book will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. today at the Houston Memorial Library in Athens. Children can bring their own book or read a favorite of Miss Sophie Grey, a Yorkshire terrier, who will be present for the program.
