THURSDAY

Hospice/MADD memorial service

Hospice of Limestone County and MADD are sponsoring a communitywide memorial service “Celebration of Remembrance & Hope” at 6 p.m. Thursday at Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Athens. The service is for anyone who as experienced the death of a loved one. Framed photos of loved ones are welcome. Contact: 256-232-5017.

FRIDAY

ALERA day trip

The Athens-Limestone County Education Retirees Association is holding a day trip to Pond Springs, a historic home of Gen. Joseph Wheeler and Dot’s Soul Food on Friday. Departure is at 9 a.m. from the Kmart parking lot in Athens. Contact: Jerry George 256-729-1145. 

Leadership Day

Cowart Elementary School’s Leadership Day honoring military veterans will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Patriotic balloon release follows the program. All veterans are welcome. Cowart is located at 1701 W. Hobbs St. Contact: 256-233-6627.

SATURDAY

Sheriff’s Coffee Call

Limestone County Sheriff’s Office Coffee Call will be held from 8-9 a.m. Saturday at the Sheriff’s Office at 101 W. Elm St., for all current, retired and former employees of law enforcement, support staff and others associated with law enforcement. Contact: 256-232-0111.

Reading program

The Limestone County NAACP invites children ages 3-13 to attend the free Steps Book Club/Reading Program session at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Round Island Creek Mission Center, 13829 Lucas Ferry Road. Learning, lunch and fun provided.  Registration and information contact: 256-216-5668.

Veterans Museum anniversary

The Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives will hold their 10-year anniversary celebration honoring museum founder Ken David at noon Saturday. Refreshments will follow.

Breaking Dawn Ball

The Athens-Limestone Public Library will host a free Breaking Dawn Ball from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday in celebration of the upcoming release of the last movie in the “Twilight” saga. Come dressed in your best Ball attire for trivia, treats, book discussion, and lots more vampire fun! For teens and older only.  Contact: 256-232-1233.

SUNDAY

Free Buffet for veterans and active duty military

Pizza Inn, located at 28235 AL 53 in Ardmore, will offer all veterans and active duty military a complimentary buffet from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday. Valid credentials or military identification required. Contact: 256-423-2500.

MONDAY

VFW hosts chicken stew

Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary will host a chicken stew in celebration of Veterans Day at 11 a.m. at the VFW Post located on N. Jefferson Street. Public invited. Contact: 256-278-8276.

TUESDAY

Blood drive

The city of Athens Public Works Department at 1600 W. Elm St. is hosting a LifeSouth blood drive from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. Donors will receive either an Alabama or Auburn T-shirt, cholesterol screening and snacks. Donors must be 17 or older, or 16 with parental consent and weigh at least 110 pounds. Bring photo identification.

Used book sale

The Friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday at the library at 405 E. South St. Contact: 256-232-1233.

Meet the Eagles Winter Sports Dinner

The Athens High School Booster Club will hold their annual Meet the Eagles Winter Sports Dinner at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Athens High School cafeteria. Cost is $5 per person. Athletes and coaches eat free. Join the Booster Club and your family eats free. Contact 256-233-6613.

Weight loss support group

Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), a weight loss support group, meets from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Mondays in Room 133 at Central Church of Christ. Contact: 256-444-8167.

• AHS Class of ’56. The Athens High School Class of 1956 will meet for a Dutch-treat lunch at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 7, at LuVici’s, 105 Jefferson St. Contact: 256-232-3257.

• Master Gardeners. The Limestone County Master Gardener Assoc. will meet at noon Monday, Nov. 12, in the Extension Office on Market Street in Athens.

    Benefit car wash/raffle

    A benefit car wash and raffle will be held from 8-11 a.m. today, June 15, in Applebee’s parking lot on U.S. 72 for an Athens child born premature and now in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Car wash is $10 and participants receive a $5-off coupon for Appebee’s and are entered in a raffle later this month involving food items from several local  businesses. Donations welcome.     Athens State University will host its annual Flag Day ceremony sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association at noon, today, June 14, in the Sandridge Student Center ballroom. A cookout will follow. Guest speaker is Lt. Gen. Jim Pillsbury, the retired deputy-commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at Redstone Arsenal.
