Respite Night

Tax service

RSVP Income Tax Service will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. beginning today at the First Baptist Church Youth Activity Center, and every Monday and Thursday thereafter until April 17. No appointments will be given. Returns will be filed at no cost to the client.

SATURDAY

Chicken stew


The Oak Grove/Thatch Volunteer Fire Department will hold a chicken stew at 10 a.m. Saturday at Station 1 on Thatch Road between Interstate 65 and Alabama 251. Cost is $18 a gallon and $5 a plate. Contact: Harold King 256-508-2269.

Hot dogs and chili

Free hot dogs and chili will be served at noon Saturday at Lincoln-Bridgeforth Park on Hine Street. If you would like to help with this event, contact Jo Brown at 256-278-0855.

ONGOING

Autism support group

Fitting the Pieces, an autism support group for parents and family members with loved ones diagnosed with the disease, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, and the first Thursday of each month thereafter at Lindsay Lane Baptist Church. Enter at the back of the building.

DAV breakfast

Tickets — for $5 each — are on sale for the Needy Veterans Benefit Breakfast. The event will be from 7-10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the DAV building on Airport Road. Contact: Scottie Gillman 256-324-0620.

Understanding horses


The Athens State University Center for Lifelong Learning class “Understanding More About Horses” will begin Jan. 30, 6:30-9 p.m., for eight successive Mondays, ending March 19.  Visit www.athens.edu/cll for more information or contact Wanda Campbell at 256-233-8262.

Computer classes

Athens-Limestone Public Library will offer computer classes beginning Feb. 2. Each class is one hour and covers specific topics, such as computer basics, using Word, using Excel, using webmail, and searching/selling on the Internet. Classes limited to five students. Enrollment is $5, with $2 credited to your patron account. One-on-one tutoring available. Contact: Library staff 256-232-1233.

Spaghetti supper

Tickets are on sale for a spaghetti supper to be held from 5-8 p.m. Feb. 11 and hosted by the AMVETS at the Vietnam Veterans Building on Elm Street. The supper costs $6 and is all-you-can-eat including garlic bread, salad, drink and dessert. Proceeds go toward the AMVETS building fund. For tickets contact Roxanne Haggermaker at 256-374-2073. Corporate Spelling Bee

Teams are being sought to participate in the Athens-Limestone County Learn-to-Read Council 16th annual Corporate Spelling Bee on March 17 in the Athens High School cafeteria. Potential participants, donors or sponsors can contact Learn-to-Read program at 256-230-3050.

National Active and Retired Federal Employees chapter 1480 will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Veterans Museum on Pryor Street. Guest speaker will be Janet Hunt, a personal fitness, lifestyle and weight management consultant. Breakfast served. Contact: Dean Morgan 256-233-0248.

    A “pawsitive” reading experience dedicated to improving reading skills of children ages 5 and older, called 4 Paws and a Book will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. today at the Houston Memorial Library in Athens. Children can bring their own book or read a favorite of Miss Sophie Grey, a Yorkshire terrier, who will be present for the program.
