THURSDAY

Table Talk

A panel discussion covering the historical, social and religious importance of the Emancipation Proclamation will be held at noon Thursday in the Athens State University parlor. This Center for Religious Studies and Ethics Table Talk session is free to the public. Feel free to bring sack lunch.

SATURDAY

Benefit breakfast

The Bethel, Tenn. Lodge 194 F&AM will serve a buffet breakfast to benefit charity from 7-9 a.m. Saturday at the Lodge building. Public invited. Nonperishable food items are being collected for the food bank.

Coffee Call

Coffee Call for area veterans and spouses, and sponsored by Col. Mel and Wanda McLemore and Jim and Jean Kelly of LawLers’s Barbecue, will be held from 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Alabama Veterans Museum, 100 W. Pryor St. Contact: Sandy 256-771-7578.

Blood drive

An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 28430 Pinedale Road in Ardmore.

Used book sale

The Friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the library, 405 E. South St. Contact: 256-232-1233.

VFD fundraiser

Advance tickets at $10 each are on sale through Saturday for the Owens Volunteer Fire Department Swamp Johns catfish fundraiser. It will be held from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena. Purchase tickets at Station 1 on Elk River Mills Road. Each $10 plate includes a choice of meat, hushpuppies, French fries, coleslaw, dessert and tea. TUESDAY

Fashion show ticket deadline

Tuesday, March 5, is the deadline to purchase tickets for the Athens-Limestone Beautification Board Dogwood Festival Fashion Show and Luncheon. Tickets are $25. No tickets will be sold at the door. The event will be held at noon Tuesday, March 12, at the First United Methodist Church Beasley Center at the corner of Bryan and Marion streets. Call RSVP at 256-232-7207 for ticket information.

Poke Sallet tickets

Ticket sales for the 21st annual Poke Sallet Follies, “Be Our Guest,” continue at the Athens Senior Center located at 912 W. Pryor St. Tickets are $35 per person, limited to two tables per customer and include a three-course meal. Tickets are sold daily from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and must be paid for at the time of purchase by cash or checks only. The Follies will be held March 7-9 at the Athens Senior Center.

MEETINGS

• Tea Party Patriots. The Athens/Limestone Tea Party Patriots will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at 100 Beaty St. Public is invited. Contact: 256-232-9051 or 256-777-2526.

• Vietnam veterans. Vietnam Veterans of America chapter 511 will meet Tuesday, March 5, at the chapter hall. Food at 6:15 p.m., business meeting at 7. All Vietnam -era veterans are welcome.
