Elkmont Street Fair

The Elkmont Street Fair will open at 8 a.m. today. There will be antiques, crafts, produce, refreshments, library book sale, free moonwalk for kids, a clown and other entertainment and games. Call (256) 732-3703 for more information.



Haney benefit

The Will Haney benefit scheduled for today has been moved to Oct. 3. There will be chicken and goat stew for sale, a bake sale and walkathon from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Owens Senior Center. Call Wanda Kirk at (256) 230-2753.



D.E. Jackson reunion

There will be a reunion of former D.E. Jackson Hospital employees at the home of Carmen Montgomery in Minor Hill, Tenn., at 10:30 a.m. today. Lunch will be served at noon. Shade Tree Fiddlin’

Musicians are invited to play banjos, fiddles, guitars, etc. downtown from 3-8 p.m. today. The event is open to the public to show appreciation to participants in the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention. Contact Jeanette at (256) 232-5411 or Trisha at 278-6436.



Meningitis walk/run

Moving for Meningitis, a walk/run to raise money to battle meningitis in memory of Jessica Elkins is from 6 p.m. until midnight Saturday in front of Athens Golden Eagles Stadium. Cost is $15 a person or group of four for $50. Registration begins at 5 p.m. The first 200 participants receive a free T-shirt.



SUNDAY

Blankenship-Lee reunion

The Blankenship-Lee family reunion will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Owens Community Center off Alabama 99. Everyone is welcome. Please bring a covered dish. Call (256) 233-0399.



MONDAY

Drive-thru flu shots

Limestone County Department of Health is having a drive-thru clinic for regular flu shots, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Sportsplex off U.S. 31 North. The cost is $2 per vaccination. Beginning Tuesday, regular flu shots are available at the health department daily from 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.



TUESDAY

Friends of Athens State University Library will host poetry readings by Jeanie Thompson and Kathleen Driskell at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the ASU library at Pryor and Elkton streets.



WEDNESDAY

Drive-through duck adoptions

From 4 p.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday, residents can drive through the Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful parking lot (behind the duck pond on East Street in the historic College Inn building) and adopt rubber ducks to be raced in the Wacky Quacky Ducky Derby. Your duck may bring home the In2Wireless/Verizon $1,000 grand prize or another of nearly 30 additional prizes. Ducks also can be adopted inside KALB from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays. ASU presents author

Athens State University will sponsor Chris Goertzen, author of “Southern Fiddlers and Fiddle Contests,” at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Student Center Ballroom. Admission is free.



Veterans resume workshop

Clements VFD yard sale

Clements Volunteer Fire Department yard sale will be from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. Oct. 3.

Respite night

AHS fruit sale

The Athens High School Band will be selling boxes of navel oranges, grapefruit, tangelos, and juice oranges from Monday through Oct. 9. The cost is $20 per box with delivery in mid-November. Please see any band member or band parent to place an order or for more information.
