Reverie Barksdale spirit night

Athens Chick-fil-A spirit night will be held from 5-8 p.m. today for 4-year-old Reverie Barksdale. Reverie has tracheal stenosis and bronchopulmonary displaysia. Participants are asked to tell the cashier your purchase is to support Reverie and the Barksdale family. Proceeds help with travel and medical expenses. The Chick-fil-A cow will be present.

GOP speaker


Paul Reynolds, Alabama Republican Party representative on the Republican National Committee, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at Mac’s Steakhouse, 1733 S. Jefferson St. in Athens. He will discuss Agenda 21, a blueprint of action to be taken locally, nationally and globally by United Nations organizations, governments and major groups in areas where humans directly affect the environment.

Positive Look


The Positive Look support group for the blind and visually impaired, family and friends will hold their annual Hot Dog Day from 10 a.m. until noon Friday at the Athens Recreation Center. Contact: Maralyn Cox 256-232-5085.

Singing on the Square

Dixie Bluegrass Boys and Borderline Bluegrass will perform at 6 p.m. Friday at Singing on the Square on the east side of the Limestone County Courthouse. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs. In case of rain, call 256-232-5411 to find out new location. 

Respite Night

Caregiver’s Night Out will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Friendship United Methodist Church, 16479 Lucas Ferry Road in Athens. Make reservations by noon Thursday, July 19, at 256-232-7207.

Lodge breakfast


North Border Lodge No. 391 will hold a country-style breakfast from 7-9 a.m. Saturday at the Lodge, 12101 Salem Field in Salem. Contact: Mickey Robertson 256-232-2335.

CASA Mud Volleyball

The 24th annual CASA Mud Volleyball Tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Swan Creek Park in Athens near Athens High School. Dozens of eight-member teams will compete. Proceeds benefit area senior and homebound citizens.

Blood drive

An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday in honor of Jacob DuBois at the Piney Grove Baptist Church fellowship hall, 28430 Pinedale Road in Ardmore.

4 Paws and a Book

A “pawsitive” reading experience dedicated to improving reading skills of children ages 5 and older, called 4 Paws and a Book will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Houston Memorial Library in Athens. Children can bring their own book or read a favorite of Miss Sophie Grey, a Yorkshire terrier, who will be present for the program. To schedule a time to read, call the library at 256-233-8770.

Germantown reunion

Doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday for the Germantown reunion at the community building on Thach Road between Interstate 65 and Alabama 251. Public invited. Covered dish lunch at noon. Contact: 256-432-2385 or 256-232-8252.

Robinson reunion

A family reunion of descendants and friends of Hezekiah Robinson will be held Saturday at the Elkmont train depot. Lunch at noon. Participants asked to bring covered dish. Contact: Harold Atkinson 256-732-4548.

Expo and Family Fun Day

A Community Expo and Family Fun Day will be held from 3-7 p.m. Saturday at Athens State University’s Founders Hall. Free food, games, entertainment and door prizes. Admission is one canned good. Sponsored by Family Resource Center, Women in NAACP and Sarrell Dental Center.

SHIP volunteers needed


Anyone who works as a counselor, administrator or educator with an interest in providing free counseling to help answer questions about health care for people on Medicare are asked to call Jennifer Wales Reece at 256-233-6412. Volunteers would be a part of the community service State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) team.

The Athens-Limestone Seniors Organization will not meet in July. Regular monthly meetings resume in August.

• VFW. Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary will gather at 6 p.m. tonight, July 17, for dinner, fellowship and the monthly meeting at the post, 4765 N. Jefferson St. in Athens. Contact: Fred at 256-233-0213.

• Historical Society. Limestone County Historical Society quarterly meeting will be held at 6:30 tonight, July 17, at First Presbyterian Church Rodgers Center. Shawn Baker, a historical storyteller, will speak at 7 on “Early Settlement/Trade on the Frontier.”

• Alzheimer’s support. Athens Alzheimer’s Support group will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, July 23, at the Athens Senior Center on Pryor Street. Caregivers or anyone with a family member or a friend that has been diagnosed with any type of dementia is invited to attend. Contact Sharon Griffis at 256-216-5683.
