• 30-hour famine. Clements Baptist Church teenagers and college students will participate in a 30-hour famine Nov. 16-17 to raise money for those who struggle with hunger around the world. Proceeds go to the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia and provide nourishment, medicine and life-saving care are for those in need. The goal is $15,000. • Turkey giveaway. The senior adult ministry and Senior Pastor John W. Jude invited the public to their annual feed the hungry turkey giveaway at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Pleasant Grove Church Family, 15439 Hasting Road in Athens. Two hundred turkeys will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis.

• Day of Love. Pleasant Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America will hold a Day of Love and give away free food boxes and turkeys at 15439 Hastings Road from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. Contact: 256-216-0660 or 256-233-5995.

• Thanksgiving dinner. A free meal community Thanksgiving dinner will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Westside Church of Christ, 25704 Smithfield Road in Elkmont.

• Anniversary. Pleasant Grove Church Family at 15439 Hasting Road in Athens will celebrate their pastor and first lady’s 17th anniversary at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18. The Rev. Barbara Clemons of the Alabama Synod will be guest speaker. Contact: Mary Steele 256-216-0660.

• Women’s Day. New Iberia M.B. Church at 21978 Alabama 99 in Elkmont will hold their first Women’s Day celebration at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25. Minister Elizabeth Gray-Raybon will speak and the Gray Sisters will provide the song service. Public invited. Snacks served after the service.

    FRIDAY
    Singing on the Square

    Singing on the Square will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, featuring Dixie Bluegrass Boys and Tilford Sellers and the Wagon Burners. In case of rain, the event will move to the Limestone County Event Center. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs to the east side of Limestone County Courthouse for the free concert.     Benefit car wash/raffle

    A benefit car wash and raffle will be held from 8-11 a.m. today, June 15, in Applebee’s parking lot on U.S. 72 for an Athens child born premature and now in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Car wash is $10 and participants receive a $5-off coupon for Appebee’s and are entered in a raffle later this month involving food items from several local  businesses. Donations welcome.     Athens State University will host its annual Flag Day ceremony sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association at noon, today, June 14, in the Sandridge Student Center ballroom. A cookout will follow. Guest speaker is Lt. Gen. Jim Pillsbury, the retired deputy-commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at Redstone Arsenal.
