Child abuse prevention


The public is invited to a Parents As Teachers hosted child abuse prevention awareness event between 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday at the Family Resource Center, 406 S. Jefferson St. Contact: Kimberly Taylor 256-230-0880.

Seniors art class

The Council on Aging is hosting an art class at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Athens Senior Center on Pryor Street. Cost is $30 and includes all supplies. Anyone interested should contact Emily Sandlin at 256-233-6412.

Respite Night

Cub Scout fundraiser


The Cub Scout Pack 24 Flapjack Fundraiser will be held from 8-10 a.m. Saturday at Applebee’s restaurant in Athens on U.S. 72. Cost is $5 a ticket. For more information or tickets, call Diane Trout 256-684-9442.

Walking tours

The final April Historic Walking Tour will be held Saturday. Walkers should meet at 9:45 a.m. at the Athens Visitors Center at 100 N. Beaty St. Walks begin promptly at 10 a.m. and last about an hour. Children’s chorale


The Heritage Children’s Chorale will present “Bound for Glory” as part of the Spring Concert Series at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Round Island Baptist Church, 14790 Browns Ferry Road in Athens. Free admission. The choir is made up of children ages 8-18 from North Alabama and southern Tennessee.

Firefighter fundraiser


The Owens Volunteer Fire Department door-to-door fundraiser begins April 25 and continues for approximately four weeks. Donations will be used to help purchase hoses and equipment for their new firetruck.
