Preservation public meeting

The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. today in Decatur to seek opinions and input from Limestone County residents about preservation and enhancement efforts here and in five area counties. The meeting will be at the Turner-Surles Community Center at 702 Sycamore St.

Lunch & Learn

Bring you lunch or pick up a snack at UnderGrounds Coffee Shop in the Center for Lifelong Learning Center, 121 S. Marion St., Wednesdays from Jan. 30 to Feb. 20, to learn about lifestyle changes and weight management in a four-week series. Call 256-233-8260 to register or visit www.athens.edu/CLL.

SOA luncheon

Spirit of Athens is hosting its annual Spirit Awards Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church Rodgers Center. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the SOA blog: athensspirit.blogspot.com or call 256-729-1160.

Square dance sessions

Shirts & Skirts Dance Club of Athens is offering a free introduction to square dance session at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Athens Recreation Center. Contact: 256-232-5970.

FRIDAY

Respite Night

Caregiver’s Night Out will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Isom’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 16230 Mooresville Road. Make reservations by noon Thursday, Jan. 31, at 256-232-7207.

SATURDAY

Benefit breakfast

The Bethel, Tenn. Lodge 194 F&AM will serve a buffet breakfast to benefit charity from 7-9 a.m. Saturday at the downtown Lodge building. Public invited. Nonperishable food items are being collected for the local food bank, which is running low on resources.

Boy Scout goat/chicken stew

The annual Boy Scout Troop 221 goat and chicken stew will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the West Limestone Volunteer Fire Department. Containers provided. Eat in or carry out by bowls, quarts and gallons. No pre-sales. Proceeds help pay for summer camp.

Tax Service Counseling

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program income-tax service will begin from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at First Baptist Church Youth Activity Center at the corner of Pryor and Clinton streets in downtown Athens. Sessions will continue every Monday and Thursday until April 15. No appointments will be given. Returns will be filed at no cost to the client. If interested, please bring tax returns from last year, Social Security numbers for each person in the household, birth dates for each person in the household, W-2 form(s) and 1099 form(s), if applicable. Elkmont beauty walk

Registration is underway through Feb. 26 for the eighth annual Elkmont High School band beauty walk to be held March 8-9. Preschoolers outside the Elkmont school district can enter. Need volunteers

Volunteers are needed at all Limestone County senior centers to teach new classes in painting, drawing, crochet/knitting, needlepoint, ceramics and scrapbooking. Contact: Jennifer W. Reece 256-233-6412.

MEETINGS

• Soil and Water. The Limestone County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors will meet at 7:30 a.m. today at the Natural Resources Conservation Service Office, 1795 U.S. 72 East, Suite 102. The public is invited.

• Tea Party Patriots. The Athens/Limestone Tea Party Patriots will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at 100 Beaty St. Public is invited. Contact: 256-232-9051 or 256-777-2526

    Benefit car wash/raffle

    A benefit car wash and raffle will be held from 8-11 a.m. today, June 15, in Applebee’s parking lot on U.S. 72 for an Athens child born premature and now in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Car wash is $10 and participants receive a $5-off coupon for Appebee’s and are entered in a raffle later this month involving food items from several local  businesses. Donations welcome.     Athens State University will host its annual Flag Day ceremony sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association at noon, today, June 14, in the Sandridge Student Center ballroom. A cookout will follow. Guest speaker is Lt. Gen. Jim Pillsbury, the retired deputy-commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at Redstone Arsenal.
