Sharon Sides benefit


A plate lunch and yard sale benefit in honor of cancer patient Sharon Sides will be held from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. today at New Life Assembly of God, 16768 U.S. 72 West. A $6 plate lunch, served 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., includes barbecue chicken, potato salad, baked beans, bread and dessert. Hot dog, chips and dessert lunch is $3. Drinks on request. Reading program

The Limestone County NAACP invites children ages 3-13 to attend the free Steps Book Club/Reading Program session at 9:30 a.m. today at Round Island Creek Mission Center, 13829 Lucas Ferry Road. Learning, lunch and fun provided.  Registration and information contact: 256-216-5668.

EHS Class of ‘57

Indian artifact show


The 2012 Athens Indian Artifact Show will be held from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday at Athens State University. Free admission. Display tables are $10 each. No reproductions, fakes or burial artifacts allowed. Sponsored by Rebel State Archaeological Society. Contact: John Hammons 256-232-0698.

The Friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday at the library at 405 E. South St. Contact: 256-232-1233.

There will not be a reunion of the Putman family this year. Organizers hope to have one in 2013.

Rabies clinic schedule


Participants may obtain $10 rabies vaccinations at any of the following remaining locations: today, June 9, 8-10 a.m. at Town and Country Animal Hospital.

• Republicans.
The Limestone County Republican Executive Committee will meet Tuesday, June 12, at LuVici’s Restaurant on the Square. Social hour at 5:30 p.m., meeting at 6:30. No food served. Contact: Ronnie Coffman at Ronnie.coffman16@gmail.com.

• Master Gardeners. The Limestone County Master Gardener Assoc. will meet at noon Monday, June 11, in the Extension Office on Market Street in Athens.

• Cancer survivors. An American Cancer Society hosted meeting and dinner with cancer survivors and caregivers will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Catfish Cabin 2. Contact: 256-232-4211.

    FRIDAY
    Singing on the Square

    Singing on the Square will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, featuring Dixie Bluegrass Boys and Tilford Sellers and the Wagon Burners. In case of rain, the event will move to the Limestone County Event Center. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs to the east side of Limestone County Courthouse for the free concert.     Benefit car wash/raffle

    A benefit car wash and raffle will be held from 8-11 a.m. today, June 15, in Applebee’s parking lot on U.S. 72 for an Athens child born premature and now in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Car wash is $10 and participants receive a $5-off coupon for Appebee’s and are entered in a raffle later this month involving food items from several local  businesses. Donations welcome.     Athens State University will host its annual Flag Day ceremony sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association at noon, today, June 14, in the Sandridge Student Center ballroom. A cookout will follow. Guest speaker is Lt. Gen. Jim Pillsbury, the retired deputy-commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at Redstone Arsenal.
