Fancy Nancy party for kids


Ooh-la-la!  The Athens-Limestone Public Library will host a free Fancy Nancy party for children ages 12 and under from 3:30-5 p.m. today. Children are asked to dress in their fanciest clothes. Learn how to be fancy with crafts, stories and snacks. Call Kelli at 256-232-1233.

FRIDAY

Positive Look


Daphne Ellison with the Limestone County Emergency Management Agency will speak on severe weather awareness during the 10 a.m. until noon meeting Friday of Positive Look. It will be held at the Athens Recreation Center next to the high school on U.S. 31 North. Positive Look is a support group for the blind and visually impaired and their families and friends.

Earth Day fundraiser

Today and Saturday are pick-up days at Dan Tera for pre-sold geraniums and “Light the Way” candles in honor of Earth Day. Proceeds go to Gulf Coast Restoration and to help provide clean water around the world. Geraniums are from Bennett’s Nursery and cost $13 each or $23 for two. Contact: 256-233-3663.

Singing on the Square

The free Singing on the Square returns to downtown Athens Friday at 6 p.m. when Lacey Snider will perform followed by The Servants gospel group at 7. Lawn chairs welcome. In case of rain, call 256-232-5411 to find the new indoor location.

SATURDAY

Pancake fundraiser


A pancake breakfast fundraiser for Boy Scout Troop 7236 will be held from 8-10 a.m. Saturday at Applebee’s on U.S. 72 in Athens. Tickets sold at the door for $5.

Garden club fundraiser

The Athens Garden Club annual Spring Plant & Bake Sale Fundraiser will be held from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday under the breezeway at Sundry Printing at the corner of East Washington and Clinton streets.

Master Gardeners plant sale

The Limestone County Master Gardeners will hold their annual Plant Sale from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday at the Farmers Market on Green Street.

4 Paws and a Book

A “pawsitive” reading experience dedicated to improving reading skills of children ages 5 and older, called 4 Paws and a Book will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Houston Memorial Library in Athens. Children can bring their own book or read a favorite of Miss Sophie Grey, a Yorkshire terrier, who will be present for the program. To schedule a time to read, call the library at 256-233-8770.

Do Da Parade

The Athens-Limestone Beautification Board’s Dogwood Festival Do Da Parade has been moved to Athens State University due to the threat of rain. Register in the lobby of the gym at 9:15 a.m. No entry fee. Bicycles, tricycles, and kid’s battery-operated vehicles decorated in a spring or Earth Day theme are welcome. Contact: 256-233-8728.

Earth Day celebration

An Earth Day party in the park is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday at Big Spring Memorial Park. Weather location is Athens State University gymnasium.  Free crafts and kids activities, live entertainment, birds of prey program and other critters, free hot dogs and Pepsi, free door prizes, and lots of exhibits and information. Bean Day

The Elkmont Volunteer Fire Department Bean Day will be held from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday at the Elkmont Fire Hall. Cost is $3 for beans, cornbread, slaw, dessert and drink.

Library page applications

Summer library page applications are due Saturday at Athens-Limestone Public Library. To be a teen summer volunteer at the library, you must be at least 13 years old by June 1. Applications are available at the library and on the library’s website, alcpl.org. Contact: Kelli 256-232-1233.

Beauty walk

A beauty walk will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the East Limestone High School gymnasium. Cost is $45. Boys and girls through age 5 can be from any area. Kindergarten through 12th grade must be from Creekside Elementary or East Limestone Middle/High School. TRIAD Trail Ride


The 17th annual Limestone County TRIAD Trail Ride will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elkmont Rural Village Stables. Gates open at 11 a.m. Cost: Adults, $15; children 12 and under, $5; non-riders, $5. MONDAY

Jedwabne Massacre discussion


Dr. Charles “Rick” Roberts will speak from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Center for Lifelong Learning conference room on the downtown Square. No charge. The topic is events that led to the Jedwabne Massacre of 1,600 Jewish residents by local citizens in Poland during World War II and its meaning in historical and ethical terms.

AARP driver’s class


The Limestone Council on Aging will host an Association of American Retired Persons safe driver’s class from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, April 24 and 26. Preregistration and attendance at both sessions are required to complete the course. To register: 256-233-6412.

Used book sale

The Friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday at the library.

Storybook Ball


Tickets are on sale for the Storybook Ball where adults and children can dine with their favorite book characters from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Limestone County Event Center. Includes kid-friendly foods, entertainment, music by the Tangerine Tambourine Band, and photo opportunities with the characters. Tickets are $20 per adult, $15 per child (under 3 free), and available at the Athens-Limestone Public Library, at www.alcpl.org and at 256-232-1233. Scholarship applications

Athens-Limestone Seniors Organization will meet and have a Dutch-treat lunch at 11 a.m. today, April 19, at Mac’s Steakhouse on South Jefferson Street in Athens. The speaker is Capt. Fred Sloss with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department.

• Republican women. Limestone Republican Women will meet tonight, April 19, at Catfish Cabin II on U.S. 72 in Athens. Social time at 6 p.m., meeting at 6:30. State Sen. Bill Holtzclaw, R-Madison, will induct new officers.

• Greek meet. A Greek meet for college-bound girls and a parent/guardian to learn about recruitment and how to obtain recommendations from sorority alumnae will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at the First Presbyterian Rodgers Center in Athens.
