e-reader class


Athens-Limestone Public Library is adding an e-reader class. Learn to download free e-books and audio books from the library at 6 tonight. Contact: Paula Laurita 256-232-1233.

Free dance lessons

Shirts & Skirts Square Dance Club will offer a second night of free dance lessons at 7 tonight at the Athens Recreation Center.

FRIDAY

Respite Night


Caregivers Night out will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Lindsay Lane Baptist Church. Make reservations no later than today, Jan. 26, at 256-232-7207.

Tax service

RSVP Income Tax Service will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. beginning Friday at the First Baptist Church Youth Activity Center, and every Monday and Thursday thereafter until April 17. No appointments will be given. Returns will be filed at no cost to the client.

SATURDAY

Chicken stew


The Oak Grove/Thatch Volunteer Fire Department will hold a chicken stew at 10 a.m. Saturday at Station 1 on Thatch Road between Interstate 65 and Alabama 251. Cost is $18 a gallon and $5 a plate. Contact: Harold King 256-508-2269.

Hot dogs and chili

Free hot dogs and chili will be served at noon Saturday at Lincoln-Bridgeforth Park on Hine Street. If you would like to help with this event, contact Jo Brown at 256-278-0855.

Beauty walk registration


Registration runs through Feb. 21 for the seventh annual Elkmont Beauty Walk. Forms are available at www.elkmonthigh.org, the school’s front office, or by contacting Keila 256-423-3972 or Debbie 256-497-3111. Any preschooler interested does not have to attend Elkmont.

DAV breakfast

Tickets — for $5 each — are on sale for the Needy Veterans Benefit Breakfast. The event will be from 7-10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the DAV building on Airport Road. Contact: Scottie Gillman 256-324-0620.

Safe drivers course

Council on Aging plans to host AARP safe drivers classes. Dates and times will be determined by interest. Visit www.aarp.org/drive for information. Call 256-233-6412 and leave your name and telephone number. Contact will be made when classes are scheduled. Cost is $12 for AARP members; $14 for nonmembers.

Understanding horses

Computer classes

Athens-Limestone Public Library will again offer its popular computer classes beginning Feb. 2. Each class is one hour and covers specific topics, such as computer basics, using Word, using Excel, using webmail, and searching/selling on the Internet. Classes limited to five students. Enrollment is $5, with $2 credited to your patron account. One-on-one tutoring available. Contact: Library staff 256-232-1233.

Spaghetti supper

Tickets are on sale for a spaghetti supper to be held from 5-8 p.m. Feb. 11 and hosted by the AMVETS at the Vietnam Veterans Building on Elm Street. The supper costs $6 and is all-you-can-eat including garlic bread, salad, drink and dessert. Proceeds go toward the AMVETS building fund. For tickets contact Roxanne Haggermaker at 256-374-2073. Corporate Spelling Bee

Teams are being sought to participate in the Athens-Limestone County Learn-to-Read Council 16th annual Corporate Spelling Bee on March 17 in the Athens High School cafeteria. Potential participants, donors or sponsors can contact Learn-to-Read program at 256-230-3050.

MEETINGS

• Soil and water meeting.
The Limestone County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors will meet at 7:30 a.m. today, Jan. 26, at the Conservation service office at 1795 U.S. 72 East, Suite 102. Open to the public.

• Democrats. The Limestone County Democrats will host an education rally and cake auction at 6 tonight, Jan. 26, at the Sheriff's Rodeo Arena, 17836 Alabama 99. Local educators and state employees are invited.

• Tea Party Patriots. Athens-Limestone Tea Party Patriots will meet at 6:30 tonight, Jan. 26, at the Athens Visitors Center at 101 Beaty St. Guest speaker will be State Rep. Dan Williams, R-Athens. Public invited. Contact: Tony Llewellyn 256-777-2526.

• NARFE. National Active and Retired Federal Employees chapter 1480 will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Veterans Museum on Pryor Street. Guest speaker will be Janet Hunt, a personal fitness, lifestyle and weight management consultant. Breakfast served. Contact: Dean Morgan 256-233-0248.
