THURSDAY

AMS parent/student meeting

A parent-student meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Athens High School cafeteria for Athens Middle School eighth-graders who will enter Athens High for the 2013-2014 school year. Includes registration procedures, course offerings and graduation requirements.

FRIDAY

Respite night

Caregiver’s Night Out will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Lindsay Lane Baptist Church, 1300 Lindsay Lane. Make reservations by noon Thursday, March 21, at 256-232-7207.

SATURDAY

Ham shoot/chicken stew

Athens Masonic Lodge No. 16 will host a ham shoot from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the corner of Elm Street and Lucas Ferry Road. $3 a shot. Chicken stew ready at 10 a.m. for $18 a gallon. Additional information: Bob Hickman 256-233-2336 or Mickey Robertson 256-232-2335.

Rescue squad garage sale

Athens-Limestone Rescue Squad is in need of saleable items for an upcoming garage sale. Call to arrange pickup or drop off items at 1401 Freeman Ave.  All types of items needed. Contact: J.R. Creel at 256-434-6355.

ONGOING

AHS greenhouse

Athens High School greenhouse opens Saturday, March 16, with vegetables, ferns and an assortment of bedding plants. Hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays and 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesdays.

Vidalia onions sale

Athens Ladies Civitan club is taking orders for Vidalia onions. Onions are $10 for 10 pounds. Order deadline is April 12. Projected delivery date is early May. Orders taken by phone at 256-232-2865 or 256-729-1255, or by mail at P.O. Box 1814, Athens, AL 35612. Mail checks by April 12 payable to ALCC. Include name, address and telephone number.

MEETINGS

• ALSO. Athens-Limestone Seniors Organization will meet and have a Dutch-treat lunch at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, at Mac’s Steakhouse on Jefferson Street in Athens. Special guest is motivational speaker and author Allison Wetherbee. Public invited.

• AMVETS. Post 21 and the Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at 22769 Black Road in Athens. Covered-dish dinner will be served. Upcoming events and business will be discussed. Contact: 256-771-2029

• SCV. Capt. Thomas H. Hobbs Camp 768 Sons of Confederate Veterans will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives in Athens. Public invited.

• NARFE. National Active and Retired Federal Employees chapter 1480 will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Veterans Museum in Athens. Guest speaker will be Tammy Burks of American Red Cross. Breakfast served.  Call Dean Morgan 256-233-0248.

    FRIDAY
    Singing on the Square

    Singing on the Square will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, featuring Dixie Bluegrass Boys and Tilford Sellers and the Wagon Burners. In case of rain, the event will move to the Limestone County Event Center. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs to the east side of Limestone County Courthouse for the free concert.     SATURDAY
    Benefit car wash/raffle

    A benefit car wash and raffle will be held from 8-11 a.m. today, June 15, in Applebee’s parking lot on U.S. 72 for an Athens child born premature and now in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Car wash is $10 and participants receive a $5-off coupon for Appebee’s and are entered in a raffle later this month involving food items from several local  businesses. Donations welcome.     Flag Day
    Athens State University will host its annual Flag Day ceremony sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association at noon, today, June 14, in the Sandridge Student Center ballroom. A cookout will follow. Guest speaker is Lt. Gen. Jim Pillsbury, the retired deputy-commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at Redstone Arsenal.
