Toys for Tots signup

The U.S. Marine Corps and the United Way of Athens-Limestone County will be accepting applications for Toys for Tots from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. today. The program is only for children from birth to age 12. Parents/guardians must bring birth certificates and Social Security cards for eligible children, and proof of income, Limestone County residency and a picture ID of themselves. Respite Night

Caregiver’s Night Out will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Isom’s Chapel United Methodist Church at 16230 Mooresville Road. Make reservations by noon today, Nov. 1, at 256-232-7207.

SATURDAY

Benefit breakfast

The Bethel, Tenn. Lodge 194 F&AM will serve a buffet breakfast to benefit charity from 7-9 a.m. Saturday at the Lodge building. Public invited. Veterans eat free. Nonperishable food items are being collected for the food bank.

Inside benefit yard sale

Athens chapter No. 214, Order of the Eastern Star, will hold an inside yard sale from 7:30-11 a.m. Saturday at the Athens Masonic Lodge building on Lucas Ferry Road. Breakfast biscuits also sold. Proceeds go for benevolent projects throughout the year.

Coffee Call

Coffee Call for area veterans and spouses, and sponsored by AMVETS Post 21 and Ladies Auxiliary, and Eugene and Jason Sanders, will be held from 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives, 100 W. Pryor St. Immediately following, there will be at 203rd MP Battalion Change of Command Ceremony at the Limestone County Event Center. Contact: Sandy 256-771-7578.

Used book sale

The Friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the library, 405 E. South St. Contact: 256-232-1233.

Veterans Day parade

The annual Veterans Day parade will be at 11 a.m. Saturday starting at Athens High School. This year’s grand marshal is former World War II paratrooper and POW Dempsey McLemore. National Defense Luncheon

The John Wade Keyes chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will host The National Defense Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church Rodgers Center in downtown Athens. Author and inspirational speaker Margret Medford will talk about living in Germany during and following World War II. Cost is $25. Contact for payment information: Judy Rewudy53@bellsouth.net

Weight loss support group

Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), a weight loss support group, meets from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Mondays in Room 133 at Central Church of Christ. Contact: 256-444-8167.

E-Reader classes

The Athens-Limestone Public Library is holding free e-Reader classes October through December. To find out class dates, times and schedule a short appointment, contact Laura at 256-232-1233. 

MEETINGS

• Sportsman Club. The Limestone County Sportsman Club will meet at 7 tonight, Nov. 1, at the Clubhouse on Kennedy Drive. Contact: Lyle Sadler 256-771-2029.

• Quilt Guild. The Quiltmakers Quilt Guild of Athens will meet tonight, Nov. 1, at First Church on Lucas Ferry. Social time is 6:15 p.m., Meeting begins at 7. Georgia Flanagan will show some of her purses and techniques for making them. Visitors are welcome. Contact: Gloria Carden 256-233-3113.

• Healing Hearts. The Healing Hearts Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in the Education Department at Athens-Limestone Hospital. Call 256-233-9536 to sign up. The group meets the first Monday of each month and is on Facebook as Healing Hearts of Limestone County.

• AHS Class of ’56. The Athens High School Class of 1956 will meet for a Dutch-treat lunch at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Luvici’s, 105 Jefferson St. Contact: 256-232-3257.
