Positive Look


The Positive Look support group for the blind and visually impaired, family and friends will gather from 10 a.m. until noon today at the Athens Recreation Center. Bring snacks to share. Jani Anderson will demonstrate how to make pottery. Contact: Wynell Reynolds 256-232-1493.

SATURDAY

North Border breakfast


North Border Lodge will have a country style breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday at the Salem Lodge on Salem Field Lane. Everyone welcome to come and eat and enjoy the fellowship.

Tutor Training Workshop

A Tutor Training Workshop is available for volunteers to tutor adults who need help with reading. The Learn-To-Read Council workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday at the Quad-Plex Office Building, 110 Thomas St., Suite 115S in Athens. Register at 256-230-3050 or ltr@pclnet.net.

4 Paws and a Book

A program dedicated to improving reading skills of children ages 5 and older, called 4 Paws and a Book will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Houston Memorial Library in Athens. Children can bring their own book or read a favorite of Miss Sophie Grey, a Yorkshire terrier, who will be present for the program. To schedule a time to read, call the library at 256-233-8770.

Talent show

Winter Talent Show featuring acts from North Alabama and middle Tennessee will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Athens Bible School’s Rollings-Lovell Auditorium. A suggested donation by the promoters of $5 per person will go toward scholarships for area students attending Florida College in Temple Terrace, Fla. The event is sponsored by the North Alabama Florida College Booster Club.

MONDAY

MLK ceremony


The Lincoln-Bridgeforth Park Committee will host the 16th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Athens. Limestone County Circuit Judge James W. Woodroof Jr. will speak and the Round Island Creek male chorus will perform. Lunch served. No cost. Contact: Robbin Hines 256-874-0287.

TUESDAY

Friends of the Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at 405 E. South St. For more information, call 256.232.1233.

THURSDAY

Square dance sessions

Shirts & Skirts Dance Club of Athens is offering two free introduction to square dance sessions on 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 24 and 31, at Athens Recreation Center. Cal 256.232.5970 for more information.

Volunteers are needed at all Limestone County senior centers to teach new classes in painting, drawing, crochet/knitting, needlepoint, ceramics and scrapbooking. Contact: Jennifer W. Reece 256-233-6412.

Tickets for ‘Bretts’


Tickets for the Feb. 1 Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation fundraiser staring Branson, Mo., headliners, “The Bretts,” are on sale now at First National Banks at Athens and Ardmore, by calling 256.233.9236, or by visiting athenslimestonehospital.com. Pre-sold tickets are $35 each; at the door, $45; 13 and under, $15; children under 2 free.

Rescue Squad yard sale

Donations are being accepted for the Athens-Limestone Rescue Squad yard sale, the date of which will be announced later. The squad office is on Freeman Drive. Call 256.434.6355 for more information.

Senior centers activities

Limestone County senior centers participants age 60 and above interested in classes for yoga, Zumba Gold or both up to three afternoons a week are asked to contact Jennifer Reece at 256-233-6412 or Jennifer.reece@limestonecounty-al.gov.

    FRIDAY
    Singing on the Square

    Singing on the Square will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, featuring Dixie Bluegrass Boys and Tilford Sellers and the Wagon Burners. In case of rain, the event will move to the Limestone County Event Center. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs to the east side of Limestone County Courthouse for the free concert.     Benefit car wash/raffle

    A benefit car wash and raffle will be held from 8-11 a.m. today, June 15, in Applebee’s parking lot on U.S. 72 for an Athens child born premature and now in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Car wash is $10 and participants receive a $5-off coupon for Appebee’s and are entered in a raffle later this month involving food items from several local  businesses. Donations welcome.     Athens State University will host its annual Flag Day ceremony sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association at noon, today, June 14, in the Sandridge Student Center ballroom. A cookout will follow. Guest speaker is Lt. Gen. Jim Pillsbury, the retired deputy-commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at Redstone Arsenal.
