Used book sale

The Friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. today at the library at 405 E. South St. Contact: 256-232-1233.

Blue Springs Fall Festival

The Blue Springs Elementary School PTO is hosting the annual Fall Festival from 5-8 p.m. today. Eight inflatables (unlimited play for $10), games, train ride, food, snacks, bluegrass music by 2011 national bluegrass banjo champion Westin Stewart, and arts and crafts.

Town hall meeting

Charlie Holley, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in Alabama’s 5th District will hold a town hall meeting from 6-7 tonight at the Athens Public Library, 405 E. South St. He will discuss sequestration, job creation and investment in education, business and infrastructure, and take questions from the audience.

Movie showing

Spirit of Athens will partner with youth community service organization T.R.A.I.L. to present a showing of the movie “The Goonies” at 7 tonight. The film will be shown inside the Storytelling tent on the Courthouse Square. Admission is $3 and soft drinks and popcorn will be available for purchase.

Blood drive

A Red Cross blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Calhoun Community College in the Robert Casteen Building, 6250 U.S. 31 North in Tanner.

FRIDAY

Alzheimer’s information session

Anyone interested in learning more about Alzheimer’s disease or Alzheimer’s Association services can visit the Limestone County Health Department from 2-4 p.m. Friday located at 20371 Clyde Mabry Drive in Athens.

Respite Night

Caregiver’s Night Out will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Lindsay Lane Baptist Church, 1300 Lindsay Lane in Athens. Make reservations by noon Thursday, Oct. 25, at 256-232-7207.

SATURDAY

Pancake breakfast

The American Legion Post 49 annual pancake breakfast will be held from 1-11 a.m. Saturday at the Post home on Cloverleaf Drive. Cost is $5 to eat in or for carryout. Containers provided. Contact: Rod Huffman: 256-233-3023.

Turkey shoot

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is inviting the public to their annual turkey shoot at 9 a.m. Saturday at the VFW Post on North Jefferson Street and Alabama 127. It will be held each Saturday at the same time through Dec. 1. Contact: Fred 256-233-0213.

Cowart Harvest Festival

The Cowart Elementary School Harvest Festival will be held from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the school on Hobbs Street in Athens. It will include carnival games, cakewalk, toy walk, bingo, basketball shootout, food, hayrides, country store, salon and tattoo parlor and more.

Ball reunion

Descendants of Philip Walter Ball and Addie Flanagan Ball are invited to a reunion and covered lunch at noon Saturday at the Owens Senior Center on Alabama 99.

MONDAY

Reduce prescription drug costs

People on Medicare parts A and B over the age of 60 can apply in person between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and from 1-2:30 p.m. Monday at the Limestone County Council on Aging to see if you qualify for reduced prescription drug costs. Bring Medicare and Social Security cards and proof of income. COA is located at 912 W. Pryor Street in Athens.

Blood drive

A Red Cross blood drive will be held from noon until 5 p.m. Monday at the Student Center ballroom of Athens State University at 300 N. Beaty St.

Pickin’ & Grinnin’

The Elkmont Pickin’ & Grinnin’ is held at 6:30 p.m. Mondays at the Elkmont Depot downtown. Live music and dancing. Call 931-427-6296.

E-Reader classes

The Athens-Limestone Public Library is holding free e-Reader classes October through December. To find out class dates, times and schedule a short appointment, contact Laura at 256-232-1233. 

Quilt auction benefit

East Lauderdale Quilters of Rogersville are holding a quilt auction to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The 86-by-96-inch quilt is 100-percent cotton. Bid via email at elquilters@gmail.com or phone 256-247-5558. Last day to bid is Oct. 31.
