Reading program


The Limestone County NAACP’s Steps book club and reading program invites children ages three to 13 to participate in a session at 9:30 a.m. today at the Round Island Creek Mission Center, 13829 Lucas Ferry Road. Lunch is provided. Call 256-216-5668 to register.

SUNDAY

Piano recital


The students of Diana Pettit will present their spring studio piano recital at 3 p.m.  Sunday, April 15, at Fairview Baptist Church, 27550 Nick Davis Road. The free recital is open to the public.

Vidalia onions  deadline

Sunday is the deadline to order Vidalia onions from the Athens Ladies Civitan Club at $10 for 10 pounds. Onions will be delivered  in early May. To order call Beth Batts at 256-729-1255 or Carol Malone at 232-2865.

MONDAY

War time decision making


Dr. Tom Pieplow will discuss Great Britain military leadership decisions made in World War II aimed at confusing the German high command concerning a planned attack on Sicily. The talk is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday in the Center for Lifelong Learning conference room on the courthouse Square. No charge.

Chicken stew


The American Legion Post 49 monthly chicken stew will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday. Cost is $5 to eat in or for per quart carryouts. Containers provided. For information, call Rod Huffman at 256-233-3023. To reserve carryouts, call 256-230-6233.

Superhero party for kids

Athens-Limestone Public Library will host a free superhero party for children ages 12 and under from 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday. Children should dress as their favorite superhero. Crafts, stories and snacks will be part of the fun. Call Kelli at 256-232-1233.

WEDNESDAY

Prayer breakfast


The Athens Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Beasley Center, corner of Marion and Pryor streets. The breakfast is a fundraiser for the Arrowhead District of the Boy Scouts, which includes Athens and Limestone County. No admission charge, but donations accepted. Fancy Nancy party for kids


Ooh-la-la!  The Athens-Limestone Public Library will host a free Fancy Nancy party for children ages 12 and under from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, April 19.  Children  should dress in their fanciest clothes. Learn how to be fancy with crafts, stories and snacks. Call Kelli at 256-232-1233.

Cub Scout fundraiser


Advance tickets are on sale for the Cub Scout Pack 24 Flapjack Fundraiser to be held from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at Applebee’s restaurant in Athens on U.S. 72. Cost is $5 a ticket. For more information or tickets, call Diane Trout 256-684-9442.

Fashion show and luncheon

Athens-Limestone Beautification Board annual Dogwood Festival Vintage Fashion Show and Luncheon will be held at noon Tuesday, May 1, at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center. Tickets are $20 and available at RSVP, 409 W. Washington St. Call

Walking tours


The annual April Historic Walking Tours are being held each Saturday in April. Walkers should meet at 9:45 a.m. at the Athens Visitors Center at 100 N. Earth Day fundraiser

Dan Tera is pre-selling geraniums and “Light the Way” candles in honor of Earth Day, with proceeds going to Gulf Coast Restoration and to help provide clean water around the world. Geraniums are from Bennett’s Nursery and cost $13 each or $23 for two. Pickup days are April 20-21 at Dan Tera. Call 256-233-3663.

• ALSO. Athens-Limestone Seniors Organization will meet and have a Dutch-treat lunch at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 19, at Mac’s Steakhouse on South Jefferson Street in Athens. The speaker is Capt. Fred Sloss with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department.

• Republican women. Limestone Republican Women will meet Thursday, April 19, at Catfish Cabin II on U.S. 72 in Athens. Social time at 6 p.m., meeting at 6:30. State Sen. Bill Holtzclaw, R-Madison, will induct new officers.
