BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A new report says nearly 2,400 jobs probably will be lost to otherwise unemployed adults and young people in Alabama if a federal stimulus program is not extended by Congress.
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which issued the report Thursday, said Alabama is one of 37 states where the emergency jobs were provided with a federal subsidy to cover wages.
The Birmingham News reports that state human resources officials confirm the figures and say the program has helped some avoid welfare assistance while gaining job experience.
Democrats are promoting the extension as a way to fight unemployment, while Republicans have called for cuts in the fund that provides the jobs.
